The new executive director for the Small Business Development Center in Springfield said the agency will likely place more emphasis on growing existing businesses in Clark County.

The agency has placed an emphasis in the past in helping small businesses get off the ground, said Rob Alexander, who took over as executive director of the SBDC. That kind of work will still occur, he said, but he argued the agency needs to shift its resources to helping existing businesses grow and add employees, he said.

“Honestly, that’s where we can really make a difference for our community,” Alexander said.

Alexander is an Enon resident who has experience in fundraising and marketing for non-profit agencies in the Columbus region. He has previously served as executive director for the National Hemophilia Foundation of Central Ohio and the Human Service Chamber of Franklin County.

The SBDC provides advice and resources for small businesses throughout the Springfield and Clark County. That could include helping a company develop a business plan, market its services or track down potential sources for financing, Alexander said.

The agency has three staff members and five consultants with experience on issues like social media and marketing and commercial lending. Most of the agencies funding comes from a combination of government grants and funding from the city of Springfield.

One of the immediate challenges is marketing the agency to area businesses, Alexander said. Many small business owners in the area are unaware of what kinds of services the agency offers, he said.

“There’s no reason for us to be a secret,” Alexander said. “What we offer has a lot of value and it’s offered at no cost.”

The agency will also likely develop workshops and seminars where local business owners can network and learn from other area business owners in their field, he said.

“This area has a real need for a larger-scale event aimed at business owners,” Alexander said.

Alexander said he’s excited to lead the organization.

“That’s a cool experience that we can play a part in helping people achieve their dreams,” he said.
