Rotary chairman to visit Urbana

A trustee of the Rotary Foundation will serve as the guest speaker at the Urbana Rotary Club’s annual Farmer of the Year Banquet.

John Germ, chairman of the Rotary International’s $200 million campaign to eradicate polio, will thank more than 30 local farmers who have donated a portion of their income from the 2010 corn harvest to the cause.

The event is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21 at the Champaign Banquet and Event Center, 240 W. Twain Ave. in Urbana.

Germ has held several leadership positions in Rotary International and has received the Rotary International Service Above Self Award. He will meet with local farmers before the banquet.

Rotary International is promoting its End Polio Now Campaign, an effort to distribute and administer an oral polio vaccine in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan.

The Farmer of the Year Banquet honors one local farmer for community service each year. Tickets are available at Perpetual Federal Savings Bank, Sweeting Tire and Bauer Stoves and Fireplaces in Urbana. Tickets can also be purchased from any Urbana Rotarian.
