Springfield Fire Marshal Brian Miller said the bulk of the pallet inventory in the building was saved by the sprinkler system.
Fire crews responded to the business at 12:30 a.m. and described the building as “thoroughly engulfed” when they arrived. There were no employees in the building overnight.
Miller explained that the roof is what is called a “lantern roof” which is higher in the middle of the building than on the sides. The fire appeared to have begun in that higher portion of the roof.
The fire did not initially appear to be suspicious, Miller said. Investigators will be checking the electrical system thoroughly.
