The 78-year-old pilot injured in a plane crash at the Studebaker Nurseries in August had purchased the aircraft less than a month before the crash, according to a preliminary crash report from the NTSB.

John Studebaker, of New Madison in Darke County, had bought the plane on Aug. 10 and had flown with a flight instructor to regain familiarity with the airplane, the report read.

Studebaker had to make a forced landing a half mile away from where he had taken off at the Andy Barnhart Memorial Airport Aug. 31.

“He noted that the airplane was slow to achieve liftoff from the runway, and about 75 feet above the ground the engine began to run rough,” the NTSB wrote in its report.  “The pilot stated that a total loss of engine power occurred shortly after he deselected carburetor heat, and that he made a forced landing to a nearby nursery located immediately west of the airport.”

State troopers said Studebaker suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The plane was identified as a single-engine Luscombe 8A, which was registered to Studebaker, the NTSB said.
