Panel to study charges in shooting that left undercover cop wounded

Suspect was wounded in shooting that also sent an officer to hospital.

TROTWOOD — Investigators will present evidence to a panel of prosecutors today who will determine whether to file charges against a suspect who was wounded in a Trotwood shooting that also left a law enforcement officer wounded.

The unidentified male suspect and an undercover Dayton police officer were transported to Miami Valley Hospital early Saturday morning where they were both listed in serious but stable condition. Their conditions remained the same as of Sunday evening, according to Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer.

“He’s still in the hospital, so we’re not releasing his name at this time,” Plummer said.

The suspect’s identity and details on the investigation into the shooting are expected to be released this morning during a joint news conference with the FBI, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Trotwood and Dayton police departments at the Dayton Public Safety Building, according to the sheriff.

At the time of the shooting, the unidentified suspect had been indicted on a gun-related charges in Dayton, according to Plummer. He was also charged in an unrelated drug case.

Trotwood police were dispatched to 4155 Salem Ave. for a reported fight early Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office. After officers arrived at Leo’s II bar parking lot around 1:30 a.m., a short foot chase took place and an officer and a suspect were shot.

The sheriff’s office launched an investigation into the shooting at the request of Trotwood Police Chief Quincy Pope, according to Trotwood City Manager Mike Lucking.

Police and city officials have not released the identity of a third individual who has been implicated in the shooting, however the city manager said a Trotwood officer will be placed on paid administrative leave.

Officers are routinely placed on administrative leave when their service weapons are fired in the line of duty.

Plummer could not confirm whether the officer had been placed on administrative leave as of Sunday evening.

The wounded officer was assigned to the Safe Streets Task Force, which targets gang-related violence and drug activity. FBI investigators and law enforcement officers with the Trotwood and Dayton police departments were “looking into gang activity” in the area of the shooting, according to previous interviews with Lucking.
