Spooky season has officially arrived with the opening of Ohio’s scariest haunted attraction, which is in Springfield.

Face Your Fears Hotel of Terror, 1291 Cold Springs Rd., is now open for the season.

“It’s an extreme haunted house,” said Fred Messaros, owner of the haunted attraction. “It’s not an amusement park type haunted house. It is a 4-story built in 1858 haunted house.”

Each room in the haunted house has a “hotel theme.” Guests will receive their room key upon arrival, hang-out at the bar, walk by the library, and visit the “swamp” outside of the house.

Each year Messaros refreshes the haunted attraction by adding something new and scary.

“We thrive on being scary,” Messaros said. “We don’t use any characters that have been in a movie.”

Before building the haunted house, Messaros was not one to slow down and look at garage sales. Now, he goes to garage sales to buy items and turn them into something spooky for the Hotel of Terror, Messaros said.

By owning the haunted house and not having to take everything down after the season, he is able to build a unique experience for attendees, he said.

Last year, the Hotel of Terror was voted the #1 Scariest Haunt in Ohio out of 160 haunted attractions by Scare Factor. The hotel also made the top 10 must-see haunt list.

“You will get scared,” Messaros said. “A lot of people don’t make it.”

The Hotel of Terror will be open 8 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays this weekend through Nov. 2.

Admission is $15 per person and attendees can add on a $2 touch pass. This pass allows workers to do whatever they want to the attendees, according to Messaros.

Messaros’ love for haunted attractions started when his father ran a haunted attraction during his high school career. He then decided to create his own haunted attraction because he felt like he owned the right property with the right house and atmosphere for a haunted attraction.

“It’s just something for people to do,” Messaros said. “There’s not a whole lot to do in Springfield.”

Hotel of Terror will host a party on Halloween night. The evening will include a live band, fire ring, and horror movies.
