A single vote made the difference in the Northwestern Local School board race.

A recount held Tuesday morning at the Clark County Board of Elections Office showed Karen Elder edging Dan Kegley by one vote.

The final count showed Elder scored 612 votes to Kegley’s 611. Kegley finished four votes behind Elder in Clark County but got three more votes in Champaign County than her, prompting officials to do an automatic recount.

In that race, incumbent Joe Tedeschi finished in first place with 721 votes.

The results didn’t change Tuesday, Clark County Board of Elections Director Jason Baker said.

The recount was the first time the Clark County election’s board used the new voting machines. Baker said the new machines checked out.

“We did the recount the same way as we always do,” Baker said. “We are just working with new equipment.”

The recount lasted about an hour on Wednesday morning.

The Northwestern Local Schools board race wasn’t the only race that will need a recount to decide the winner. In Champaign County, the race for St. Paris mayor is too close to call and will require a recount that will take place Tuesday.

In that race, incumbent Mayor Brenda Cook owns a three-vote lead over Gary Doeden. Cook has 225 votes and Doeden has 222. The margin prompted county officials to plan a recount.

Other than the two races, the rest of the election results were certified last week by both Clark and Champaign County officials.

In Springfield, incumbent Mayor Warren Copeland easily defeated his two write-in opponents garnering more than 75% of the vote. Copeland is set to serve his fifth term as mayor.

Also in Springfield, Jamie Callan and Chris Williams won new terms on the Springfield City School District School Board. Joan Elder also won a seat on the board.

Elder is the program coordinator at the Community Health Foundation in Springfield. She said shortly after being elected that she is looking forward to the work she will be doing on the board.

“I’m looking forward to serving on the school board and working toward the future that is promising for the students and our staff,” Elder said.

In New Carlisle, Mayor Mike Lowrey and Councilwoman Amy Hopkins won reelection, while newcomers Linda Eggleston Nowakoski and Dale Grimm won seats. Vice Mayor William Lindsey was defeated.

In Urbana, incumbent mayor Bill Bean fended off a try by Justin Weller. Bean score about 55 percent of the vote while Weller finished with 45%
