MORE: Clark County Municipal Courts to close during longtime judge’s funeral
Schumaker most recently served as the deputy attorney general for law enforcement for Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.
DeWine, Ohio’s governor-elect, led him during the oath.
Schumaker replaces the late Eugene Nevius, who died Dec. 20. Nevius had served as on the bench since 1981.
Schumaker said it’s an honor serving the people in Clark County in his new role.
“I will earn your trust and serve you well and see that justice is done in Clark County, and hopefully attack some problems here and make it a better place to live,” he said.
Schumaker said he plans to start work immediately.
“I’ve got jail calls all weekend and arraignment Monday morning. We are going to start right away.”
He said he plans to meet with the other municipal court judges, Denise Moody and Thomas Trempe, to set goals for the court.
“My job right now is to acclimate to this position and to make sure I am totally competent, totally professional and that everything we do is service focused,” Schumaker said.
Schumaker was one of five applicants who sought a nomination. Schumaker is a graduate of Wittenberg University and earned his law degree from The Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law, according to information from the Ohio Attorney General's Office.
He is a member of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission, a designated chairman on the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission, and a member of the Ohio Bar Association as well as the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio.

Schumaker was selected for the job after the Clark County Republican Party organized a judicial screening committee to gather applications for the position. That committee made recommendations to the Clark County Republican Party Central Committee, who forwarded their recommendation to Kasich’s office.
