Mercy Health - Springfield Regional Medical Center has been honored for the ninth time for its patient care and heart bypass surgery outcomes.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) honored the hospital with its three-star rating, which indicates the highest category of quality, for the care it provides patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting procedures.

“I congratulate our cardiac care team for earning this accolade for the ninth time,” Mercy Health - Springfield President Adam Groshans said. “It’s a reminder that area residents can receive top quality, nationally-ranked care close to home.”

Mercy Health has earned this top ranking nine times between 2009 and 2019.

This three-star rating places Mercy Health - Springfield among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the United States and Canada.

“Delivering quality patient care with compassion is our motivation and seeing our patients lead happy fulfilling lives after bypass surgery is our reward,” Surender Neravetla, MD, Mercy Health - Springfield medical director of cardiac surgery, said. “I thank the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for recognizing our work.”

STS calculates the rating using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by an STS Adult Surgery Database participant. This databse has approximately 6.9-million surgical records and gathers information from over 3,800 participating physicians.

STS established its National Database in 1989 as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons.
