Marine with local ties dies in Afghanistan

A Marine Corps explosive ordnance disposal technician from Logan County was killed in Afghanistan last week.

Gunnery Sgt. David Shane Spicer died Monday, July 13, outside Delhi while conducting combat operations against enemy forces.

Spicer, 33, who was born in Dayton, is the son of Sandra and Gary Lockwood.

He joined the Marines in 1994 after graduating from Benjamin Logan High School in Zanesfield.

He lived in Montross, Va., with his pregnant wife, Katrina Thompson, and their daughter, Abigail.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, David Shane Spicer II, on July 18, 2008.

Spicer was stationed for a number of years at Indian Head, Md., and continued his service with the Second EOD Company at Camp Lejune, N.C.

He will be buried with full military honors Thursday in Arlington National Cemetery.
