The first kindergarten class in Springfield was held at the East Side Chapel at the northeast corner of Main and Water streets.

The class was established under the sponsorship of Mrs. Bessie Black Martin, wife of local lawyer Paul C. Martin and one of the founders of the East Side Chapel, a mission church of Covenant Presbyterian.
