Logan County Sheriff’s Office welcomes new K9 thanks to community donations

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office welcomed a new deputy to the force this week — a K9 named Thor.

Although Thor has only technically been on the job for a couple of days, his handler Deputy Cole Piatt, said the two have already had the chance to get some work done.

“He’s my new sidekick. He wants to get out and work the road just as much as I do,” Piatt said.

Thor is bite trained, as well as trained on article, vehicle, building and area searches.

The sheriff’s office was able to purchase Thor after community members donated $10,000 to bring another K9 to the department after K9 Cane died late last year.

Cane was placed out of service in November, after only a couple months on the job, after slid on a patch of ice in the sheriff’s office parking lot and ran into a trailer. He suffered some internal bleeding as a result and was taken to a veterinary.

When his condition got worse, he was taken to MedVet in Columbus for treatment, where he later died.

Piatt was also Cane’s handler.

“Thank you is not enough to say. But that’s all you can say is thank you,” Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds said. “We hope to show the return in the good deeds or the good service that the K9 brings to the community.”
