Mercy Health – Springfield announced that two of its nurses received honors at the 18th annual Cameos of Caring, a Wright State University College of Nursing and Health-sponsored gala that took place last month.

Leslie Clarkston of the intensive care unit Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Medical Center and Sandra Hess of the emergency department at Mercy Health – Urbana Hospital were among 16 registered nurses who received awards for their contributions to quality health care in the Miami Valley.

Clarkston began her career at Springfield Regional Medical Center five years ago as a participant in a program the cultivates the growth of the best new graduate nurses through continued education and clinical experiences. She earns accolades from her co-workers and her patients, whom she credits with teaching her how to be a better nurse.

Hess started working at Urbana Hospital in a non-medical capacity in her youth. Seeing the hospital’s nurses at work inspired her to start nursing school in her 30s and she’s worked as an emergency department nurse since 2003. Her colleagues prize her professionalism, positive outlook, joyfulness and willingness to help her patients in any way possible.

“Serving patients with expertise and compassion is at the very heart of nursing,” said Elaine Storrs, Chief Nursing Officer, Mercy Health – Springfield. “Leslie and Sandra exemplify what is best about nurses, and I’m delighted to see our community honor them for the great work they do.”

The Wright State University Cameos of Caring award program started in 2001 to spotlight outstanding bedside registered nurses in the Miami Valley. Since its beginning, the awards gala has raised $450,000 in scholarship funds for Wright State University nursing students.
