‘Destiny’s Act’ testimony ongoing
Local supporters of a state bill that would increase penalties for someone convicted of physically abusing a child testified before an Ohio House committee Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Assistant Clark County Prosecutor Andy Wilson testified in support of House Bill 182, called “Destiny’s Act.”
The bill is named after Destiny Shepherd of Clark County. Shepherd received permanent brain injuries at the age of 1 after being violently shaken. Her mother, Randi Shepherd, also testified Wednesday.
Randi Shepherd’s former boyfriend was convicted of injuring Destiny by violently shaking her. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. Desiny’s Law would require a sentence of at least five to 10 years for anyone convicted of causing permanent injury to a child under the age of 5.
The bill has been reintroduced by state Rep. Bob Hackett, R-London.
Testimony is expected to be taken over the next several weeks.
