Jordan easily defeats Garrett for U.S. House seat

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan retained his seat representing Ohio’s massive 4th Congressional District according to final, unofficial results Tuesday night.

Jordan, R-Urbana, easily defeated Janet Garrett, a first-time Democratic candidate from Oberlin who has spent more than 30 years as a kindergarten teacher. Jordan won 68 percent of the vote compared to 32 percent for Garrett, according to final, unofficials results.

Jordan, a long-time conservative lawmaker, has served in Congress since 2007.

He will represent Ohio’s 4th district, which spans a huge portion of rural Ohio stretching from south of Urbana and heading north to Lake Erie. It covers all or parts of Allen, Auglaize, Champaign, Crawford, Erie, Huron, Logan, Marion, Mercer, Sandusky, Seneca, Shelby and Union counties.

“I want to thank the voters of Ohio’s 4th district for their continued support of our efforts to eliminate wasteful government spending and bring a thoughtful check and balance to the excesses of the Obama administration in Washington,” Jordan said in a statement Tuesday.

Garrett entered the race by collecting enough write-in votes to serve as the Democratic Party’s nominee after learning Jordan was initially set to run unopposed.

Both candidates had starkly different views on the issues they felt were important to voters in the district.

Jordan advocated for policies like a Cut, Cap and Balance proposal that would cut and place a limit on federal spending. He also argued for further investigations into allegations that the Internal Revenue Service placed tougher reviews on some organizations due to their political affiliations.

A 1982 graduate of Graham High School in St. Paris, Jordan started serving as a state representative in 1995, then became a state senator before moving on to his current seat in Congress.

Garrett had argued issues like the environment and improving education were more pressing issues for voters in the district.
