Hospital construction on schedule

SPRINGFIELD —Bricklaying will begin on the south face of the new Springfield Regional Medical Center this month as work ramps up in nearly every area of the hospital campus.

Drywall installation on the first floor (emergency department) is three weeks ahead of schedule, thanks in part to timely deliveries and a project superintendent (Dennis Turner of Springfield) who is “the best in the business at organizing a project and keeping the trades working in a productive flow,” said Kevin O’Brien, project director at Danis Building Construction Co.

Mold-and-moisture-resistant drywall allows installation before the building is enclosed and will provide infection control when the hospital is complete, he said

Three of 11 elevators were brought on site in May. Installation of three more will begin mid-month. The three story atrium window framing is also scheduled to start mid-month.

“Another major milestone will be the substantial completion of the mechanical room,” O’Brien said. The mechanical room is located under the “green roof” which will be installed this summer. The green roof will be the largest in southern Ohio.

The main canopy, which faces North Street, is going up and site work such as water, sanitary and storm detention ponds continue.

An average of 250 workers are at the site daily, he said.

Local contractors for June will include Cason Roofing, Central Fire Protection, CIRES, National Stair, Ohio Edison, Vector Interiors and Demmy.

Local material suppliers for June are Bryce Hill, Brain Lumber and Robinson Insulation.

The $235 million Springfield Regional Medical Center is scheduled to open January 2012.
