Hidden Treasure: Buck Creek Nature Park

Leann Castillo is the director of the National Trail Parks and Recreation District. She has access to thousands of acres of recreational land in the Springfield area. Castillo recently spoke to Springfield Living about what she thinks is one of Springfield’s Hidden Treasures.

What is your favorite thing about Springfield that not a lot of people know about? Buck Creek Nature Park

What is it? It is a four-acre park where families can play, learn and explore together. The Buck Creek Nature Park includes a natural playground, a nine station adventure literacy trail, a picnic area and native meadow, prairie and wildflower plantings. Other amenities include an outdoor amphitheater, with seating made from stone slabs from the former Memorial Hall, and an example of a beaver habitat The park connects to the Lagonda softball fields through a wildflower walking trail along the levee, as well as paths from the nearby bike trails and a path to the existing whitewater feature. This park also includes nature trails throughout the tree lines surrounding the Carleton Davidson Baseball Stadium. The trails circle around both sides of the stadium and meet behind the levee at the Nature Park along Buck Creek.

Where is located? The park is located on Mitchell Boulevard along the Buck Creek behind the Carleton Davidson Baseball Stadium at 1101 Mitchell Blvd., and the National Trail Administrative Office at 1301 Mitchell Blvd.

Why is it a hidden treasure? This is a unique first for Clark County that started as a small project with a few ideas for a natural playground to bring more people together to play and enjoy nature. These ideas grew and developed into an amazing play area that kids and adults can enjoy together. My favorite comment that I have overheard at the park was from a 12 year old boy who said, " this is the cheapest park that I have ever seen, but it is AWESOME!"

How long have you know about it? The park has been open for nearly a year. Each time I am at the park, I meet someone that just learned about it.

What would you tell someone not from Springfield about it? This park is a great destination for families that allows kids to run, jump, climb and play on natural and recycled elements. It also provides many learning opportunities through play.

What do you think Springfield should do about it? Visit it today.

What is misunderstood about this hidden treasure? I don't think that it is misunderstood, I think that more people should visit and explore what it has to offer.
