Heritage Center: Springfield pioneers make new life

Ohio played a key role in the development of the nation, providing a link between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River.

When the National Road came to the area in the 1830s, it helped tie Ohio economically and politically with the east.

When construction of the road ended in Springfield prematurely because Congress couldn’t agree to continue funding, Springfield became known as the “Town at the End of the Pike.” The population boomed as westward settlers stopped here to put down roots.

At the Heritage Center, you can find some of the important things those brave pioneers brought to their new home including tools to build a new life and remnants of their former lives to share with new generations.
