Graham board member resigns

Mitchell cites personal reasons for resignation.

Graham Local Schools Board of Education Vice President Alan Mitchell has resigned.

In a letter to the board Nov. 10, Mitchell cited personal reasons for leaving the board. He’s had health problems, according to board President Duane Miller.

“Effective 31 December, I will be stepping down from the BOE,” the letter reads. He thanked the board for allowing him to serve for seven years.

The board accepted Mitchell’s resignation at a meeting last week.

Since his letter in November, the board has been preparing to fill the vacancy, Miller said, making a list of possible candidates to approach.

The board can choose whether or not to open the process up to public applications. However, it chose to make a list of names instead, he said.

Mitchell’s term was through 2015.

“Mr. Mitchell was on the school board that hired me,” said Graham Superintendent Norm Glismann. He’s worked with Mitchell for five and a half years.

“I’ve always found him to be a very good board member, very much a student advocate,” Glismann said. “He’ll be missed.”

The board’s next meeting is Jan. 7, when it will set their its schedule for the year. The board has until Jan. 30 to vote in a new member.
