The Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is sponsoring a gift card giveaway on Facebook to promote local restaurants.

“It’s just kind of a goodwill gesture to the restaurants who we know right now are struggling, probably as much if not more than anyone, with having all the different restrictions placed on them,” Chris Schutte, vice president of destination marketing and communications for the CVB said. “It’s going to be a tough time for local smaller businesses.”

The gift card giveaway is posted at noon each day during the week on the Visit Greater Springfield Facebook page. The CVB will select a local restaurant to feature and post a trivia question related to that restaurant. The first person to post the correct answer will win the $50 gift card to that restaurant.

“The main focus of the trivia question is driving them (residents) back to the online presence of the restaurant - either their menu, Facebook page, or website,” Schutte said.

He explained that the gift cards are meant to be used towards a carryout order within the next two weeks.

“Our goal was to get people to use those now when we know the restaurants themselves really need that business,” Schutte said.

The CVB has sponsored the vast majority of the gift cards, but some businesses like Rudy’s Smokehouse wanted to split the price of the gift card, Schutte said.

“This is really just a way for us to continuously point out that we have great local restaurants,” Schutte said. “We need to try to support them however we can during this time.”

The CVB and Chamber of Greater Springfield is working on a hard mailer for Clark County residents featuring the status of the local restaurants, their hours of operation and the level of service they are offering.

Schutte said they decided to do this because “unfortunately as we move along here, some of the hours are changing and also some people are starting to close.”

This week the gift card giveaway will feature five local restaurants including Buckeye Sports Lodge, O’Conners Irish Pub, Speakeasy Ramen and The Hickory Inn.

“We will keep this going as long as we can,” Schutte said.
