Dick’s Sporting Goods in Springfield closing: What people are saying

Dick’s Sporting Goods on Bechtle Avenue in Springfield is set to close tomorrow. A sign posted inside the store says that this is the only location closing, and advises customers to shop at locations in Beavercreek and Huber Heights.

“We are closing. Dick’s Sporting Goods (this location only) last day of business 3/16/19. Please shop at these nearby locations for all your sporting goods needs or visit dicks.com,” the sign says.

It is not clear at this time why this store is closing. Managers at the Springfield location could not answer questions and deferred to corporate. Repeated calls to Dick’s Sporting Goods corporate offices have not been returned.

Last year, Dick’s announced that it would stop selling assault-style guns and would not sell weapons or ammunition to anyone under the age of 21. The company’s sales declined 3.9 percent over a three-month period that ended Nov. 3, The Wall Street Journal reported.

This week, the Springfield News-Sun reported the chain will stop selling guns and some hunting gear from 125 of its stores, according to comments from the company CEO on an earnings conference call.

The Springfield store, located at 1690 N. Bechtle Ave., opened in October 2016.

Dick’s scheduled closing follows a series of store closings around the country and in the region, including the Upper Valley Mall Sears which closed Sunday.
