Coronavirus: Clark, Champaign schools plan how, when to provide food to students

Superintendents in Clark and Champaign counties are working on plans to provide food to their students during the three-week shut down that was ordered from Gov. Mike DeWine to slow the spread of COVID-19, or coronavirus.

The closure for all public and private K-12 schools will take place until April 3, where it will then be reviewed to possibly be extended.

The Springfield City School District will serve both breakfast and lunch on a first come, first serve basis, said Superintendent Bob Hill.

The district will provide meals from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays through March 20, then from March 30 through April 3.

The grab-and-go meals can be picked up in the main entryway at the following locations: Clark Early Learning Center, 1500 W. Jefferson St.; Hayward Middle School, 1700 Clifton Ave.; Lagonda Elementary School, 800 E. McCreight Ave.; and Schaefer Middle School, 147 South Fostoria Ave.

With donations from the Second Harvest Food Bank, 100% of students within the district are eligible for free or reduced lunch and breakfast, said executive director Tyra Jackson.

Tecumseh Local School District has their plan in place to provide food to their students after staff and community members met on Sunday.

“Thank you to the incredible group of staff and community members for meeting yesterday to create a plan to execute this undertaking,” Superintendent Paula Crew said.

Starting today the Lunch Bus will be at various locations throughout the district between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day.

Those locations include: Donnelsville Elementary, New Carlisle Library, New Carlisle Elementary, Smith Park, Park Layne Elementary, Coach Hill Lane, Churchill Manor Apartments, Community Market parking lot, Raynor Park, Kennedy Drive, Lucky’s Car Lot, and Fairway Terrace Mobile Home Park.

In addition to donated items from the community, what is available in the Tecumseh Local Child Nutrition Department and donations from the Second Harvest Food Bank, Impact Bethel will also be helping students in the district through April 5.

“Snacks and easy-to-prepare food will be available in the Little Free Libraries located in front of the New Carlisle Library and in front of Park Layne Elementary School,” the non-profit said.

Community members are invited to take what they need or leave what they can, including nonperishable food, personal care items and paper goods.

Graham Local Schools are offering free grab-and-go food bags for children under the age of 18 until Friday, March 27, said director of operations Don Burley.

“Each bag will contain the day’s lunch and breakfast items for the next day,” he said. “Locations across our large district have been selected to minimize travel for parents as much as possible, and also to make it accessible by walking in villages and communities.”

School buses will be parked at several locations throughout each day from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for meal pick up.

Those locations include: Saint Paris - Evans Purk Building, Christiansburg - Miller’s Meats, Terre Haute - Terre Haute United Methodist Church, Thackery - Main Street, Rosewood - Rosewood United Methodist Church, Carysville - Kiser Lake Marathon, Millerstown - Enter off of Ward Road onto First West Street - Exit on Urbana Strett to North Heck Hill, Springhills - Harrison Township Building, and Westville - Renewed Strength Church.

If you cannot make it to an afternoon pick up, there will be an evening option each day from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Evans Purk Building in Saint Paris.

“Thank you for your cooperation, patience and understanding as we work through this process,” Burley said. “There may be some bumps in the road, but your schools are committed to making sure children have food available for lunch and breakfast.”
