Coffee halts would-be robber at Tim Horton’s

Man who says, ‘Give me the money,’ gets java spray instead.

SPRINGFIELD — Hot coffee may have kept a robber from getting cash at the Tim Horton’s on West North Street.

An employee told police she was making tea around 1 a.m. Thursday when a man placed a brown plastic bag next to her on the counter. He then told her, “come on, honey, open the register and give me the money. I’m not going to hurt you,” according to the report.

The woman said she could see a black-handled knife in his coat sleeve. She grabbed the hot tea and coffee and charged the would-be robber.

“I grabbed that coffee. I told him you ain’t getting nothing and I threw that coffee on him and he jetted out of here running,” the employee told dispatchers in a 911 call.

A co-worker called 911. The man was last seen running south from the restaurant across the railroad tracks, police said.

He’s described by police as a man in his late 40s between 5 feet, 5 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches and weighing about 150 pounds. Police said they are trying to collect surveillance video of the incident.
