Clark County Fairgrounds is gearing up to host ‘Quake in the Quarry’, a two-day boat racing event this weekend.

The event will take place on July 6 and 7 at the Champions Park Lake on 4401 South Charleston Pike, directly next to I-70 on Laybourne Road.

“It’s free to the public,” Executive Director of Clark County Fairgrounds Dean Blair said. “So you can come out and see the boats run and just enjoy it.”

The races will showcase the Marine Racing Club of Illinois, a club that conducts outboard boat races under the endorsements of the American Power Boat Association, the largest sanctioning body for power boat racing in the USA. This will be the club’s first stand-alone event in Springfield.

Blair said that he’s very delighted to have MRC in town this weekend.

“We’re very pleased to see them come to Springfield with their teams and crews,” Blair said. “It’s great for tourism, great for the fairgrounds, and great for the Springfield community.”

Teams from Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio are expected to arrive on Friday in preparation for the event.

The races begin at 8 a.m. each day.

The event will feature commercial vendors, designated parking, and handicapped access.
