Seniors at Clark and Champaign County schools may miss out on their originally scheduled high school graduation ceremonies due to the coronavirus, or COVID-19, after schools were ordered closed for the rest of the academic year.

Several schools in the district will light up their stadiums tonight in honor of those seniors.

Stadiums will be lit up for 20 minutes starting at 8:20 p.m., which is 20:20 in military time, to honor the students in the class of 2020.

Bob Hill, Superintendent at Springfield City Schools, said in a post to the district’s Facebook page that the Wildcats are happy to help honor the seniors.

“The #BeTheLightOhio initiative is encouraged by the OHSAA and Wildcat Nation is happy to participate,” Hill said. “This is just one of the many ways we will be honoring the Springfield class of 2020.”

Brian Kuhn, Superintendent at Clark-Shawnee, posted on the district’s Facebook page that all the schools of the Central Buckeye Conference will be participating.

“We’re inviting students and families to drive by, honk, show their excitement and congratulations for the class of 2020,” Kuhn said.

All CBC schools are asking the public not to congregate in the parking lots, but to remain in their vehicles and only drive by, honk and look at the special lights.

“It’s just to look at the special bright lights as we celebrate the bright future of our seniors,” Kuhn said.

Other schools participating in the stadium light up include Greenon, Northeastern, Kenton Ridge, Tecumseh and Urbana.

Urbana City Schools tweeted that they will also have a ringing of the UHS Victory Bell every 11 seconds during the 20 minutes in honor of each of their seniors.

The Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio High School Athletic Association have also tweeted out their support of the event.
