The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for assistance identifying potential witnesses to a fatal canoe crash last week on the Mad River.

Law enforcement is actively investigating the crash that killed 1-year-old Miya Ye, according to a Monday social media post by the sheriff’s office.

Ye and her family were on a canoeing trip when her family missed their exit at state route 55 and their canoes became stuck on an underwater tree.

“The Champaign County Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a female canoer on Mad River, stating that her infant child had just fallen in the water,” according to the social media post. “According to the caller, she and other members of her party were floating down Mad River when they approached the area of several fallen trees and debris south of state Route 55, when the infant child fell from the mother’s lap and disappeared under the rushing water.”

Ye was found a few of hours later in the river in a debris area, taken to Mercy Health where lifesaving efforts were conducted but were unsuccessful. Ye was pronounced dead.

Under Ohio law, all children younger than 10 are required to wear a life jacket on water, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Now, law enforcement is asking anyone who may have seen the family on the canoe trip to call them.

“During the course of this investigation, detectives were advised that the possibility existed that individuals may have been fishing on the Mad River, near the bridge at state route 55, on the day of the incident and may have seen the family pass them in the canoes,” the post says. “Anyone that may have been present at Mad River on July 23 and saw the family in the vicinity of the bridge at state Route 55 is asked to contact the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office at 937-484-6091.”
