The sheriff’s office posted the following school safety tips:
Back to school: Volunteers buy all supplies for students at Springfield elementary school
While driving in a school zone:
• Be on the lookout for school zone signals and always obey the speed limits
• When entering a school zone, be sure to slow down and obey all traffic laws
• Always stop for school buses that are loading and unloading children
• Be aware of and watch out for children near schools, bus stops, sidewalks, in the streets, in school parking lots, etc.
• Never pass other vehicles while driving in a school zone
• Never change lanes while driving in a school zone
• Never make a U-turn while driving in a school zone
• Never text while driving in a school zone
• Avoid using a cell phone, unless it is completely hands-free, while driving in a school zone

While at school events:
• Always be aware of your environment and people in it
• If you see something suspicious, say something to your school officials and law enforcement
• Know the laws regarding weapons, electronic devices and social media at school and school events. If you are not sure, check with your school administration or local law enforcement agency
“As always the men and women of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office will continue to partner with our area schools to provide the safest environment possible for our county’s most precious resource, our children,” the post said.
