The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office has launched a free cell phone app.

Champaign County Sheriff Matthew Melvin said in a statement that the new app was created to increase services to citizens regardless of their location.

“This app is another tool that can be utilized to assist the community in continuing the partnership with their Sheriff’s Office in order to help provide a safer and more informed Champaign County,” the statement said.

The app is available for download for all i0S and Android users. Residents who download the app can use such features as push notifications, submit tips, inmate look up, update-to-date status of the county’s most wanted.

“By downloading the app, Champaign County citizens are more informed and prepared,” the statement said.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office also launched an app earlier this month. Sheriff Deb Burchett said the app was created because she wants to be transparent with the community and wants it to be convenient.

“We want to be open with our community. Let the community know what’s going on at the sheriff’s office so they can get it immediately,” Burchett said.

The app has many of the same functions as Champaign County’s, like looking at inmates who are currently in the jail, looking for sex offenders who may be living in your neighborhood and submitting tips, which users can do anonymously.
