Earlier this year, she notified county Republican leaders that she did not plan to run for re-election. “I’ve been thinking about it for quite some time,” Warman said.
While she enjoyed working with taxpayers, Warman said, she wants to be able to spend more time with her children and grandchildren and it seemed like the right time to step down.
Her resignation takes effect on July 31.
She originally began her service as a county employee decades ago while working in the payroll department at the Wellington Nursing Home. She moved to a position in the auditor’s office nearly 30 years ago and has been working there ever since, she said.
Warman said she also created a position for a chief deputy recently so there would be someone in the office who knows how to run the daily operations.
Ed Corwin, chairman of the Republican Party Executive Committee, said an interim auditor may be selected in the short term, and the party’s central committee will have up to 45 days to either affirm that selection or choose another candidate to fill the post.
Bob Corbett, Champaign County commissioner, said Warman had given some indications that she would resign, so the decision did not come as a complete shock.
“I expected her to resign, but I didn’t expect it to be quite so quick,” Corbett said.
He added the position is one of the most important in the county because so much of the county’s money flows through that office.
He said it will be important to make sure a good replacement can be found to fill the position.
