Here are three crime stories the Springfield News-Sun reported recently.

1. Springfield man accused of firing shots during fight

Raymond Scott, 21, was charged with discharge of firearm on or near prohibited premises. He pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $10,000.

Springfield police began their investigation when they were called to the 2400 block of Lagonda Avenue in reference of a fight on Aug. 21, according to an affidavit filed with the charges.

“Witnesses advised that there were several people outside in the road arguing and were all around when the male started shooting.”

No one was hurt in the shooting, the affidavit indicates.

The police were told by a witness that the suspect left the scene.

A short time later, police were able to find and arrest Scott near the scene.

“Mr. Scott told officers that while in the backseat of the cruiser, he ingested an unknown amount of drugs,” the affidavit says.

Police took Scott to Springfield Regional Medical Center for evaluation and after being cleared by medical staff, he was arrested, according to the affidavit.

2. Springfield man accused of escaping police custody

Jason Sloat, 38, was charged with assault, escape, vandalism and obstructing official business. He pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $35,000.

Springfield police began their investigation when they were dispatched to the area of East Liberty Street and Tibbetts Avenue in reference to a male with a gun, according to an affidavit filed with the charges.

The affidavit says a man told police that he was walking out of Family Dollar on Selma Road when Sloat pulled up on the street and pointed a black handgun at him and used a racial slur.

Officers located Sloat and they did not locate any weapons in the vehicle.

When Sloat was driven to the police headquarters in downtown Springfield, he attempted remove himself from the patrol car, the affidavit says.

“Officers advised Mr. Sloat to lean against the patrol vehicle so officers could put his hands back behind his back. At this time Mr. Sloat pushed (an officer) to the ground and began running out between patrol vehicles,” the affidavit says.

Officers said they were able to chase Sloat down, tase him and put him back into custody.

3. Springfield man sentenced in cocaine trafficking case

Arron Bryson, 26, was convicted of trafficking cocaine, a felony in the fourth degree, and was sentenced on Aug. 22. He was ordered to pay all costs.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office began their investigation when they conducted a search warrant on May 31. The investigators wrote in an affidavit they had to breach a door to Bryson’s residence.

“When making entry into the residence with the assistance of the dog warden due to two aggressive dogs within the residence, investigators located manufacturing material for crack cocaine,” the affidavit says.

Deputies reported that Bryson admitted to trafficking crack cocaine to supply a female’s drug addiction.

According to the affidavit, Bryson said he planned to go to North Carolina if he was not incarcerated.
