The Ohio Performing Arts Institute (OPAI), 1616 E. High St. in Springfield, will hold auditions Saturday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Sept. 22 for their 30th annual production of “The Nutcracker.”

“We have created a tradition in Springfield,” said D. Scot Davidge, artistic director and founder of OPAI. “I can’t go anywhere in town without seeing some kid that has been in “The Nutcracker.”“

There are students auditioning for “The Nutcracker” that are 2nd and 3rd generation dancers.

Auditions for beginning to lower intermediate dancers are 2 to 3:30 p.m. and upper intermediate to advance dancers are 3:30 to 5 p.m. Beginning to lower intermediate dancers may come either day and will not need to stay the entire time. Upper intermediate to advance dancers should plan to come both days and stay the entire time. Auditions are for ages 4 and up.

Each cast member is required to pay a participation fee of $50 for OPAI members and $60 for non-members.

Experience is not required because there are several roles for non-dancers like the marching soldiers or mice.

This year the community can expect to see new costumes, new set pieces, a different battle scene, and a flame breathing dragon.

Davidge’s productions of “The Nutcracker”are not similar to other productions. He has added additional characters to meet his goal of clearly telling the story of “The Nutcracker.”

“I like to show the flow and keep the story going,” Davidge said.

In his years of working on Broadway, he has always heard that people do not understand the story behind the dancing. This encouraged him to create a transparent story line.

The staff at OPAI are excited for practices to begin for “The Nutcracker.”

“It’s exciting to feel the rumble around the studio,” Davidge said. “It’s a thing to do and this is how you start Christmas.”

“The Nutcracker” performance will be 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at Clark State Community College, Kuss Auditorium, 300 S. Fountain Ave. in Springfield.
