Payroll Project: Champaign County’s highest-paid employees

Champaign County’s highest-paid employee last year was Susan Bailey-Evans, a long-time Department of Job and Family Services worker and current director of the agency.

She retired at the end of 2015 and was rehired in February. Her $156,387 in total pay for last year included $40,987 in vacation and sick leave payouts. Evans also serves as director of Logan County’s DJFS.

The county had three employees who made salaries of more than $100,000 each in 2015, including Evans, the same as in 2014, according to a searchable database of local government payroll assembled by the I-Team.

With a population of just less than 39,000, Champaign County had 57 employees who made more than $50,000 last year out of 386 total employees, including seasonal and part-time.

According to the data, the five highest-paid Champaign County employees last year were:

1. Department of Job and Family Services Director Susan Bailey-Evans: $156,387.

2. Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Services Board of Logan and Champaign Counties Executive Director David Higgins: $109,981.

3. County Prosecutor Kevin Talebi: $104,135.

4. Highway Maintenance Supervisor Ted Black: $88,900.

5. County Engineer Stephen McCall: $85,354.
