The latest list of colleges and universities under investigation by the federal government for their handling of sexual violence complaints includes two Wittenberg University cases that have been open for years.

The U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights released the updated list of Title IX investigations last week. Appearing on the list does not mean federal law has been violated, but indicates a complaint has been made under the title that protects against gender discrimination in education.

One Wittenberg case, opened in August of 2011, has not been unresolved for five years and four months. Only one of more than 300 other cases nationwide has been open longer.

In 2015, the university questioned why the federal government was taking so long to resolve the complaint, with administrators saying they have made great strides in improving the school's sexual violence response procedures since the first complaint was filed.

At that time only three Ohio schools had open complaints. That list has grown to 15 investigations at 11 colleges and universities.

New complaints were filed against Miami University, Oberlin College and the Ohio State University in the past three months. We are working to learn more about those complaints.
