Late Thursday, the district announced the schools would release two hours early on Friday also.
“All Greenon Local Schools will release two hours early tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 13, due to excessive temperatures inside buildings. Latchkey will be available at Indian Valley,” according to a statement on the district’s website
WHIO Storm Center 7’s forecast calls for Friday to be similar to Thursday. Temperatures could reach into the 90’s, according to forecast.
“We continue to evaluate temperatures of the classrooms daily,” Greenon Superintendent Brad Silvus said earlier Thursday.
Clark County students are not strangers to getting out of school early because of heat. Schools closing their doors early due to the high temperatures has occurred over the last several years.
School officials often cite the fact that the older school buildings don’t have air conditioning or proper circulation. The fact that it’s so hot in the building, sometimes reaching temperatures of 100 degrees inside, cause learning to be near impossible, school leaders have previously said.
Taxpayers are remedying the situation. In Greenon, a new $50 million kindergarten through 12th-grade school complex is being built and floors are currently being installed. Also, work on the exterior of the building continues to be constructed.
Clark-Shawnee Local Schools and Southeastern are other districts that have annually closed school early due to excessive heat. However, they have not closed for heat issues so far this school year.
