Graham Local Schools approves new digital academy

The Graham Local School District Board of Education approved the creation of a new online academy earlier this week, just months after the district separated ties with its previously sponsored charter school, The AB Graham Academy.

Graham Online Academy for Learning, or GOAL, will open this fall and offer similar services to what ABGA offered, GLS Superintendent Norm Glismann said. The district had sponsored ABGA for five years.

“GOAL is an alternative educational option utilizing online curriculum and local staff support for students who seek a non-traditional learning experience in grades 7 through 12,” according to the presentation the school board heard Monday.

The district will set up two 25-person labs in both the high school and middle school, which can serve a total of 100 students.

Glismann said the maximum number of students for the first year will be 100.

Tuesday, the district started the process of filling teaching positions for the new academy. The positions will first be posted internally.

The application process for current AB Graham Academy students begins Monday. They will be allowed to apply first.

Current ABGA student’s applications are due May 5. On May 12, all district students may begin to apply.

AB Graham Academy Board members could not be reached to see if the charter school has found a new sponsor for next school year.
