Fire crews responding to two simultaneous fires Thursday in Springfield resulted in an elderly woman and a pet being rescued, another pet dying, and a firefighter suffering a gunshot wound from a firearm that was left in a fire.

The Springfield Fire Rescue Division said they responded to a reported house fire in a two-story home in the 600 block of Piqua Place, two blocks west of South Limestone and Clark streets. On arrival, crews found an active fire on the first floor, and neighbors told them there was an elderly resident still inside.

Firefighters started a search and rescue operation in heavy smoke while starting to fight the fire, eventually finding the woman.

The fire division said that medics provided life-saving care and took the woman to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

While crews were fighting the fire, a firearm inside the house discharged and hit a firefighter, who was taken to the hospital as well. According to fire department officials, the firefighter didn’t suffer life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

As crews fought the fire on Piqua Place, a second fire was reported in the 500 block of Mount Vernon Avenue, just across Buck Creek from the east side of downtown. Firefighters found a fire in the basement of a three-story home there.

The second fire was quickly brought under control, and firefighters revived one of two pets in the home by administering oxygen, according to the department.
