Fire crews responding to two simultaneous fires Thursday in Springfield led to an elderly woman and a pet being rescued, another pet dying, and a firefighter being shot by a firearm left in the fire.

In a release, Springfield Fire Rescue Division said that they responded to a reported house fire in a two-story home in the 600 block of Piqua Place. On arrival, crews found an active fire on the first floor, and neighbors told them there was an elderly resident who was still inside.

Firefighters started a search and rescue operation in heavy smoke while starting to fight the fire, eventually finding the woman.

The fire division said that medics provided life-saving care and took the woman to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

While fighting the fire, a firearm inside the house discharged and shot a firefighter, who was taken to the hospital as well. According to the release, the firefighter didn’t sustain life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

As crews fought the fire on Piqua Place, a second fire was reported in the 500 block of Mount Vernon Fire, where crews found a fire in the basement of a three-story home.

The second fire was quickly brought under control, the release said, and firefighters revived one of two pets in the home by administering oxygen.
