It is believed the two men were involved in an altercation earlier in the evening and gunfire broke out in the 200 block of Oakwood Place just after 3 a.m. Sunday, said Moody. Strodes was found shot near the porch of a home where he occasionally stays and Meyers was in the street at Oakwood Place and South Lowry Avenue.
It is still unclear what happened, said Moody.
“There’s quite a bit of forensic evidence that we have to go over,” he said. The evidence includes at least 30 shell casings and several weapons, he said.
“We’re really evaluating what we have and waiting on results from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office,” he said.
Moody said some witnesses have provided false information to detectives.
“We would ask that people, quite frankly, tell the truth because we need to think about Mr. Meyers’ family and Mr. Strodes’ family,” he said.
Meyers’ girlfriend of six years, Geneva Williams, described him as a “jokester.”
“He was a real friendly guy, he was a jokester,” she said. “He’s a sweetheart, he really was. He was a good man.”
Williams described Meyers as a loving father to their 3-month-old son, as well as his other two children, who are 2 and 3 years old.
Meyers was a native of Cincinnati who moved to Springfield 16 years ago, she said.
“I just love him and I miss him and I wish that this never happened,” she said.
