Two indicted in Urbana bank robbery, including former employee

A man and woman accused of robbing an Urbana bank in March pleaded not guilty this week to several felony charges.

A Champaign County grand jury issued indictments last week for Ryan H. Seibert, 22, and Michaela M. Anderson, 19. They were arraigned in common pleas court on Monday and their bonds were each set at $300,000. Both remained in the Tri-County Jail on Tuesday.

Seibert has been charged with aggravated robbery, robbery, grand theft, receiving stolen property and two counts of theft. He’s a former employee of the bank, Urbana Police Sgt. Ed Burkhammer said, and his charges also include accusations that he stole money while working there.

Anderson has been charged with aggravated robbery, robbery, grand theft, receiving stolen property and possessing criminal tools.

They’ve been accused of robbing two tellers as they loaded the ATM with cash at a Security National Bank branch in Urbana on March 5.

Seibert allegedly approached the tellers as they walked from the branch at 848 Scioto St. to the ATM about 50 yards away in the parking lot and said he had a weapon, according to the indictment.

About $10,000 was taken, Burkhammer said, and none of it has been recovered.

Some residents provided key evidence that lead investigators to the alleged suspects, Burkhammer said, including a license plate number of the getaway car that was registered to Anderson.

“They weren’t counting on the perfect timing of the guy just seeing them and him being cognizant enough to get the license plate number,” he said.

The robbery was only the second or third bank robbery the Urbana police chief could recall in the city in the past 30 years, he said at the time.
