Threatening calls to Graham schools prompts sheriff office response

Threatening phone calls to Graham School administration prompted the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office to sweep the school and investigate.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement that the caller said Thursday afternoon there was an active shooter in the building. The phone call took place after school was released for the day.

“The high school enacted a short lockout procedure in order to conduct a protective sweep of the building, and to initiate an investigation,” the school said in a press release. “There was no credible threat, and an all-clear led to business as usual after hours.”

An investigation led authorities to New Jersey, the school said.

“Local deputies shared that the calls were actually made by a young juvenile female who believed that she was contacting a gaming site, and no actual threat to students, staff or the public ever existed,” the school said.

Graham Local Schools were the first district in Champaign County to get a student resource officer. The officer began working at the school in 2016.

The sheriff’s office said the officer was the school district during the call and immediately acted to ensure no one was harmed..

The school said student safety is a top priority.

“Thanks to local law enforcement, tracking and verifying these types of calls was efficient and we appreciate the support of our SRO and the county sheriffs for their proactive partnership to ensure safety at Graham Local Schools.”
