Hampton told police, according to the affidavit, that she attempted to discipline her teenager and the teen began fighting her.
Springfield police began their investigation Nov. 12 when they were called to a home on East Madison Avenue after a 14-year-old called police saying her mother beat her with a belt. The teen told police that she walked her younger sister to school and her mom got mad because it took her too long to get back.
“(The 14-year-old) stated that her mother, Amy Hampton, got mad at her because it took her too long to walk to and from the school,” the affidavit says. “(The teenager) stated that she was sitting on the couch and Amy told her to get in the corner. (The teen) stated that she did not get in the corner and that Amy just started hitting her in the face and body with a leather belt 10 or 15 times.”
The teenager said she ran out of the house and to a neighbor’s home, the affidavit says.
“Officers did observe a bruise to the left ear and back of the neck,” the affidavit says.

Hampton told police that the teen took much too long to get home and had legal issues in the past. She said she tried to tell her to stand in the corner for discipline when the teen talked back to her and began getting physical.
“Amy advised she tried to grab (the teen) at which time (the teen) swung at her,” the affidavit says. “Amy stated she grabbed (the teen) holding her trying to spank her with a belt. Amy advised that (the teen) swung at her.”
No immediate charges were filed by the responding officers, the affidavit says, but detectives elected to do so.
“(A detective) downloaded the photos and immediately contacted Children’s Services due to the seriousness of the injury to the neck and well as to the victim’s ear,” the affidavit says.
