Springfield police began their investigation Thursday morning at around 5:30 a.m. when they were called to a home on the 700 block of West John Street. Officers were told that a man had been stabbed by his wife, according to an affidavit filed with the charges.
“(The victim) was sitting at the kitchen table when officers arrived,” the affidavit says. Channels was standing in front of the victim applying pressure to the wound with a towel, according to the affidavit. She told officers the incident was an accident and that she had been trying to stab the couch.
The affidavit says officers saw blood all over the living room and a large amount of blood near the front door.
“The knife used was inside the sink in the kitchen containing blood on the blade,” the affidavit says. “Medics arrived on scene a short time later.”
The knife and pillows from the couch were collected for evidence, the affidavit says. The affidavit says there were more than 20 holes in the couch where Channels was stabbing.
The man told police, according to the affidavit, that the two were arguing and he was sleeping on the couch. Channels went downstairs and tried to reignite the argument.
“(The man) advised that he still wouldn’t talk to her,” the affidavit says.
It was then Channels allegedly grabbed the knife and began stabbing the couch.
“(The man) advised that he tried to get up from the couch because Mrs. Channels kept stabbing the knife closer and closer to him into the couch,” the affidavit says. “He advised that he moved his arm to push himself off the couch and was stabbed.”
A next court date has not been set in the case.
