A Springfield police officer was treated at the hospital Thursday afternoon after pulling a woman from a fire.

Officer Joseph Robinson observed flames coming from the upstairs window at an apartment fire on North Limestone at around 3:30 p.m. and was advised by a witness that a woman was inside, according to a police report.

“Officer Robinson was shown the way to the upper level and rushed up the stairs to the front door,” the report says. “Officer Robinson used bodily force and then thrust his way through the door, finding (a female) lying on the floor.”

The woman was unconscious and Officer Robinson proceeded to pull her to safety down the stairs. However, while doing so he suffered from smoke inhalation, the report says.

“Due to the heroic and selfless actions of Officer Robinson, (the woman) was saved from burning inside her apartment,” the report says.

Robinson was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center for further treatment, according to the report, and was released by the hospital after completing a physical assessment.

Meanwhile, officers at the scene investigated the fire as a case of arson, according to another Springfield police report.

“After the fire department extinguished the flames and made the structure safe for entry, (officers) took photographs of the entire upper level of the residence,” the report says. “The first area was the southeast bedroom, with what looks to be a recliner that was set on fire and burned. The second was a bathroom off the hallway where the door was set on fire and burned and the area between the vanity and the bath rub had been burned from the floor up to the shower rod.”

No charges have been filed at this time as police are continuing to investigate the case.
