Springfield police, fire investigate 2 reported weekend vehicle fires

Springfield Police and Fire Divisions are investigating two reported vehicle fires that happened over the weekend.

Officers were dispatched around 6 a.m. on Friday to the area of South Lowry Avenue and West Liberty Street regarding an assist with a vehicle fire, according to a Springfield police report.

When crews arrived, they “located a white Lincoln Navigator that was on fire with no visible license plate.”

The vehicle had heavy front end fire damage, and “firefighters believe this vehicle fire to be suspicious,” the report says.

Two days later,officers were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday to the 200 block of S. Plum St. in reference to a fire assist, according to a Springfield police report.

When crews arrived, they spoke to Springfield Fire Division Captain Dan Faust who said he and his crew located and extinguished a 2007 Lexus ES-350 car fire.

“Capt. Faust stated that the doors to the Lexus were unlocked when they were on scene,” the report says. “Capt. Faust advised that there was a gas can in the front passenger’s seat floorboard area.”

Police spoke to a witness who said, “he heard someone outside, then a “boom” and then loud footsteps,” the report says. He said he didn’t see the suspect or know the direction of travel, and that he “only heard suspicious noises outside prior to the car fire occurring.”

According the report, the Springfield Fire Division believes this car fire was an arson.

No suspect information was available for either incident, and Springfield police and fire continue their investigations.
