Springfield ax murderer: 3 things to know about the Jerry Rogan case

A Springfield man who killed his father and brother with an ax will be released next month on parole after 30 years in prison. The Clark County Prosecutor’s Office opposed his release from prison.

Here are three things to know about the case.

1. Details: Jerry Rogan was 20 years old at the time of the deaths. He pleaded no contest to the slayings and was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison.

It was reported that Rogan appeared “normal” just hours before the murders.

Rogan was a star athlete during his high school years at Springfield South, playing both football and wrestling.

2. Victims: The victims were his father, Perry Rogan, and his younger brother, Terry Rogan. The father and son were killed with an ax as they slept, the Springfield News-Sun reported at the time. Jerry Rogan was arrested for the crime after he called 9-1-1 and said the pair were "gone." Police said he later admitted to committing the murders after an eight-hour interrogation.

3. Verdict and sentencing: His plea was part of an agreement with the prosecutor's office to change the charges from aggravated murder to murder. He also waived his right to appeal as part of the agreement.

Jerry Rogan is scheduled to be released in April, despite opposition from the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutors said there’s nothing else they could do. He will have to serve five years’ probation after release.
