A Springfield man is dead after being shot in a parking lot Tuesday night in what police said might have been a drive-by shooting.

Keith C. Wooster, 22, of Springfield, was shot in the head in the 900 block of Selma Road around 10 p.m.When crews arrived, Wooster had a faint pulse and was still breathing. He was taken to Springfield Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release from the Springfield Police Division.

A firearm was recovered from the scene and officers found several shell casings of unknown caliber, according to a police press release. Investigators are continuing their search for the shooter.

Witnesses who were in the area said the attack happened suddenly. Tammy Mundy, owner of Mundy’s Diner across from the Fuel America Mini Mart, said she was sleeping when she first heard the gunfire.

“I heard a scream and pretty much within a couple minutes police were in that lot,” Tammy Mundy said. “I heard the shot and I knew something bad happened, but you just never know.”

Mundy said gunshots are not unusual for the area.

Police said they are not yet sure whether the incident involved a robbery or some sort of altercation.

Initial reports indicate shots may have been fired from a vehicle that sped away from the scene. Anyone with information, is asked to contact the Springfield police at 937-324-7716.

Family and friends of Wooster took to social media to remember him and mourn his loss.

“Rest in Peace Keith Wooster. It doesn’t feel real you’re gone. Please keep his family in your prayers,” a friend posted on his Facebook.

“It’s so crazy how life is so short for no reason,” another Facebook friend posted. “Another one of our young ones was taken from the world. And it’s so unfair.”

“I’m so lost for words,” another said. “Rest in Peace Keith Wooster. You will be loved and missed by so many. We used to clown around all the time we used to have good times. I’m so lost right now, why did it have to be you. Gone too soon.”

The shooting is the third homicide in Springfield so far this year and the second where no one was immediately arrested. Last year there were 13 homicides reported to Springfield police.

While the number of murders has dramatically fallen over the last year, Mundy said she still wants there to be even less.

“I just wish things would change around here,” Mundy said. “I’ve got three kids and I couldn’t imagine keeping them here their entire lives, by that time, I don’t know what this city’s going to become.”
