Clark County deputies arrested a Springfield man they alleged was in possession of a large amount of marijuana after he was found passed out behind the wheel of a car with his foot on the gas.

Derrick Lake, 27, of Springfield, was taken into custody after a gas station manager alerted police that Lake had been stopped at a gas pump for an hour and appeared to be passed out, according to court records. He was charged Tuesday with trafficking in drugs, possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia and OVI.

Deputy Bryan Beller said in an affidavit he arrived at the corner of Limestone Street and Leffel Lane around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

“I got to the driver side door and I observed a male, identified as Derrick Lake, passed out in the driver seat,” Beller says in the report. “He was slumped over in the driver seat with the car running and his foot on the gas. I opened the door and he did not wake up but he pressed the gas harder causing the car’s engine to speed up.”

The deputy alleged he could smell alcohol and marijuana and said when he asked Lake to step out of the vehicle he was unsteady on his feet.

Beller placed Lake in his cruiser, and then searched Lake’s vehicle and allegedly found 60 grams of marijuana.

“I found a large bag of marijuana in a back pack with several smaller baggies and one bag made up ready for sale,” Beller alleges in court records.

Beller then took Lake to the Clark County Jail, where more than $500 was found on him.

Lake allegedly told deputies the marijuana was for his own personal use.

He pleaded not guilty in Clark County Municipal Court on Tuesday morning and a judge set his bond at $3,000, according to Clark County Municipal Court filings.
