A Springfield man was arrested Saturday afternoon after allegedly robbing the Security National Bank on East Main Street, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

David Newport, 32, is charged with aggravated robbery in the incident.

Officers responded around 9:30 a.m. to the bank, 2730 E. Main St., on a reported armed robbery.

“The unknown suspect entered the business, displayed a handgun and demanded money,” according to a Springfield police report.

Employees in the bank told police the suspect, a 5-foot-6 male who was wearing a black hoodie, gray sweat pants, black and white mask and black tennis shoes, entered the bank and jumped on the counter, the affidavit says.

“He fell as he came over, at which time he had a gun in one hand and a black bag in the other hand. He then began to demand money. He handed one of the employees the bag and began yelling at her to put money in the bag, at which time he leaves the bank on foot southbound out the door,” the affidavit says.

No customers were inside the bank when it was robbed, and no injuries were reported in the incident.

A Clark County detective received information the day before, “which was that David Newport had robbed the Security National Bank on Jan. 6,” the affidavit says.

The detective drove past Newport’s sister’s residence where he was staying and noticed a black jeep parked beside the house, which authorities believed Newport could be driving it, according to the affidavit.

It was later located at Delta Road Apartments when officers stopped the vehicle.

“Newport jumped out of the driver side and fled on foot with officers giving chase,” the affidavit says. “Upon checking the black Jeep, it was found to contain a loaded handgun on the front passenger seat, and a red bag containing what appears to be the same cloth mask that the bank suspect was wearing.”

While officers were looking for Newport, his sister showed up looking for her Jeep, which Newport took earlier that morning, according to the affidavit.

Officers searched the residence, “and in the room he went into was found a pair of black/white tennis shoes that appear to be from the first robbery on Jan. 6,” the affidavit says.

Newport was later found at Kenwood School and taken into custody around 3:30 p.m.

He appeared in Clark County Municipal Court Sunday on charges of aggravated robbery, as well as warrants out of Champaign County. His bond was set at $50,000, and he is being held in the Clark County Jail.
