A Springfield man is facing robbery charges after a store clerk said he stole items and announced he had a gun.

Brock Raines, 39, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Jail on robbery charge Saturday. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and a $10,000 bond was set in the case.

Springfield police began their investigation on Saturday at around 2 p.m. when they were called to the Family Dollar store at 801 Selma Road, according to a police report.

“Officers were on East Street when they observed a male wearing the exact same clothing as described by the employee walking north on East Street at Kenton Street,” the report says. “The male observed officers and began running west on Kenton Street holding the side of both jacket pockets. I began to run after this male and gave him numerous commands to stop. The male finally stopped and prone out on the sidewalk as ordered to do so.”

The man refused to give his name or information, the police report says, but officers were able to find out that it was Raines. He was taken back to the family dollar where a store employee was able to identify him as the person who stole from the store, the report says.

“(The employee) stated that she observed the male in the detergent aisle placing numerous items from the shelves into his pockets,” the report says. “(The employee) approached this male and advised him to remove the products from his pockets and give them to her. The male stated to her ’ No, I have a gun!’ She asked once more and again the male stated that he had a gun on him. (the employee backed away and when she did, the male exited the store with the items failing to pay for them. “

Raines reportedly denied saying that he had a gun and told officers that he felt he should be charged with theft and not robbery charges. He was booked in on a charge of robbery, according to the report.
