Springfield couple arrested, accused of letting 3 kids live in filth

Three young children lived in a home where dirty dishes and garbage were piled in the sink and on the floor and an offensive smell filled the home, Springfield police say.

Adam Pennywitt and Rebecca Pennywitt, both 27 and of Springfield, were booked into Clark County Jail on three counts of child endangering, according to Springfield police report.

They were not in Clark County Jail Friday morning, according to jail records. Also, no formal charges had been filed in Clark County Municipal Court as of Friday morning, according to online records.

Springfield police began their investigation on Thursday at around 1 p.m. when they were dispatched to see the living conditions of children. The police report lists the kid’s ages as 2, 8 and 10 years old.

“Upon entering the residence there was a strong offensive odor,” the police report says. There was a large amount of clutter in the main living area. Officers observed that there was no heat in the residence. The outside temperature was 44 degrees.”

In an interview, Rebecca Pennywitt allegedly told police the home’s basement had flooded and the furnace had gone out.

“Officers then checked the kitchen,” the report says. “Officers observed a large amount of clutter, dirty dishes and garbage in the sink and on the floor.”

The officers also found that the kids did not have beds, rather they slept on mattresses laid on the floor.

Officers arrested Adam and Rebecca Pennywitt. The kids were taken to a grandmother’s house.
